GRI launches new Waste Standard

GRI have launched a new Waste Standard which requires organisations to report on waste generated throughout the value chain and to release detailed information on its composition and how it is managed.

The new Standard (GRI 306: Waste 2020) expands and replaces GRI 306: Effluents and Waste 2016 to look at an organisations waste impacts beyond the level of the organisation.

In our view this is a fantastic development as it will ensure that organisations really understand the waste generated by their products and services and will drive down waste consumption leading to a more circular economy. At a time when plastic pollution is hitting headlines this standard couldn’t come at a better moment and it will allow increased transparency for consumers.

GRI is an international standards organisation that helps organisations to understand and communicate their impact on sustainability issues. The new standard is now freely available as part of the wider GRI standards (see original article here).
